Navigating spiritual formation?

Consistently, many of us find our thoughts dominated by the surrounding world, often feeding our minds with ungodly contemplations. Therefore, it is imperative to engage in disciplines that align our thoughts with God’s kingdom perspective. Scripture reading stands as a prominent means to achieve this alignment, as highlighted in 2 Timothy 3:16:

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness."

Studying God’s kingdom is essential for progress in spiritual formation. Dallas Willard emphasizes that immersing ourselves in Scripture and culminating in the worship of God allows His order and nature to permeate our thoughts and feelings, ultimately influencing our actions (Dallas Willard, Renewing the Christian Mind: Essay and Interview, and Talks.Edited by Barry Black Jr, New York: Harper Collins, 2016, 74).

He further explains that true study is not merely the accumulation of information but the deep internalization of the kingdom’s principles through the written word and learning from the living Word. This process fosters a natural response in our thoughts, emotions, and actions, integrating us into the flow of God’s eternal reign. As we come to know God’s Word, our beliefs and perspectives are transformed, impacting every facet of our lives (Dallas Willard, Renewing the Christian Mind: Essay and Interview, and Talks.Edited by Barry Black Jr, New York: Harper Collins, 2016, 74).

In this spiritual transformative journey, we must also acknowledge our dependence on the Holy Spirit. Paul exhorts the Ephesians to abandon the “futility of their minds” (Ephe 4:17) and to “be renewed in the spirit of your minds” (Ephe 4:23). This inner renewal of our minds is achinved through the work of the Holy Spirit (Tit 3:5). Progressively conforming us to the image of Christ. From one degree of glory to another (2 Cor 3:18).So,it is by the Spirit’s power, that our inner being is renewed daily.

Moreover, when Scripture is embedded in our minds, the Holy Spirit can bring it to our attention in times of need, especially during temptation. It serves as the “sword of the Spirit” (Eph 6:17), effectively employed in spiritual battles. Jesus’ use of Scripture to counter temptation exemplifies this victorious strategy.

Furthermore, intertwining Scripture reading with practical disciplines enhances the transformation of our thoughts: Memomrization & Meeditate, Icon & Ipods, Mentor & Memoirs (Randy Fraze and Dallas Willard, Renovation of the Heart: Putting in the Chracter of Christ, Colorado Springs, Colorado: Think Publisher, 2005. 99-103).

  1. Memorization and Meditation: This discipline profoundly shapes our minds. Joshua underscores its importance: “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth” (Josh 1:8).

  2. Icon and Ipods: Utilizing carefully chosen images or Scripture flashcards can redirect our thoughts toward godly matters. Strategically placed visuals and audible reminders serve as effective tools for thought renovation.

  3. Mentorship and Memoirs: Engaging with mentors who seek heart transformation and reading biographies of devout individuals can significantly influence our minds and draw us toward Christlikeness. For instance, studying the life of George Whitefield has been a personal source of motivation over the years.

By diligently practicing these disciplines, we open ourselves to profound spiritual growth and a deeper alignment with God’s kingdom. A pathway to our Spiritual Formation.
